What Is Bazi?

Bazi (八字), literally "eight characters," is the Chinese system of destiny analysis also known as the Four Pillars of Destiny. Each pillar — year, month, day and hour — consists of a Heavenly Stem (天干) and an Earthly Branch (地支). Together the eight characters describe the balance of the five elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) at your birth, and from that balance a practitioner reads personality, relationships, career aptitude and the timing of opportunity.

Unlike Western astrology, which maps planetary positions, Bazi maps time itself. The Chinese calendar treats time as cycles of elemental qi: every year, month, day and hour carries a stem-and-branch signature. Your chart is a snapshot of those four cycles intersecting at the moment of your birth.

Why Solar Time Matters

Bazi hour pillars are defined by the sun's true position, not by clock time. Singapore runs on UTC+8, but the sun at Singapore's longitude (103.85°E) is roughly an hour behind that clock — solar noon in Singapore falls at about 1:05pm. If you were born at 1:00pm clock time, your Bazi hour is still the 午 (Wu) hour, but a birth at 11:20pm may actually belong to the previous hour — or even the previous day's pillar. This single adjustment changes the hour pillar in a meaningful share of charts, which is why serious practitioners insist on it.

This calculator applies the full correction automatically: longitude offset plus the equation of time, based on your birth city.

Born in Singapore or Malaysia Before 1982? Your Timezone Was Different

Most free calculators get older Singapore charts wrong. Singapore only adopted UTC+8 on 1 January 1982. Before that, clocks ran on UTC+7:30 (1946–1981), UTC+9 during the Japanese occupation (1942–1945), UTC+7:30 (1941), UTC+7:20 (1933–1940), and UTC+7 (1905–1932). West Malaysia followed a nearly identical history. A 9:00pm birth in 1975 Singapore is really 9:30pm in today's terms — enough to shift an hour pillar.

This calculator detects your birth date and applies the correct historical offset for Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru and Penang automatically.

How to Read Your Result

Day Master (日主). The Heavenly Stem of your day pillar is you — the reference point of the entire chart. There are ten Day Masters (Yang/Yin of each element): 甲乙丙丁戊己庚辛壬癸. Everything else in the chart is read in relation to it.

Ten Gods (十神). Each other stem in your chart relates to your Day Master in one of ten ways — 比肩, 劫财, 食神, 伤官, 偏财, 正财, 七杀, 正官, 偏印, 正印. These describe how wealth, authority, creativity, support and competition express themselves in your life.

Hidden Stems (藏干). Each Earthly Branch conceals one to three stems. They reveal influences that are not visible on the surface of the chart — often where the most interesting reading lies.

Season (月令). The month branch sets the season of your birth, and the season sets the baseline strength of every element. A Wood Day Master born in spring is in season and strong (旺); the same Day Master born in autumn is out of season and weak (死). Judging Day Master strength is the first step of any serious reading.

Shen Sha (神煞). Auxiliary stars from the classical texts — 天乙贵人 (the Nobleman), 桃花 (Peach Blossom), 驿马 (the Travelling Horse), 文昌 (the Academic star) and others — that add colour and nuance.

Luck Pillars (大运). Fortune is not static. Every ten years a new stem-branch pair overlays your chart, strengthening some elements and clashing with others. The calculator shows when your pillars begin and what each decade carries. Much of practical BaZi consulting is about timing decisions to these cycles.

What a Calculator Can't Tell You

A calculator computes; it does not judge. It can cast your pillars precisely, but it cannot weigh a chart the way a practitioner does — whether your Day Master is genuinely strong or only apparently so, which element serves as your useful god (用神), how your combinations and clashes resolve, or what your current Luck Pillar means for the decision you are facing this year. That is interpretive work, and it is where a reading earns its value.

FAQ

What is a Bazi calculator?

A Bazi calculator converts your birth date, time and location into your Four Pillars of Destiny chart — the Year, Month, Day and Hour pillars, each made of a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch. This calculator also derives your Day Master, Ten Gods, hidden stems, Shen Sha stars, seasonal strength and 10-year Luck Pillars.

Is this Bazi calculator really free?

Yes. The full chart — including Luck Pillars and the PDF download — is free, with no account and no payment. Master Yuan offers paid consultations for those who want their chart professionally interpreted, but the calculator itself has no catch.

What information do I need to generate my chart?

Your birth date, birth time (as close as you know it), gender (used only to determine the direction of your Luck Pillars) and birth city. If you don't know your birth time, tick "I don't know my birth time" — the year, month and day pillars remain accurate.

What is solar time adjustment in Bazi?

Bazi hours follow the sun, not the clock. Solar time adjustment corrects your clock time for your birth location's longitude and the equation of time. In Singapore the correction is roughly minus 61 minutes, which can move births near an hour boundary into a different hour pillar — and births near 11pm into a different day pillar.

I was born in Singapore before 1982 — is my chart different?

Possibly. Singapore used UTC+7:30 from 1946 to 1981 and only moved to UTC+8 on 1 January 1982. This calculator applies the correct historical timezone for Singapore and West Malaysian cities automatically, including the 1942–1945 occupation years (UTC+9). Many other calculators miss this and can cast the wrong hour pillar.

What is the Day Master?

The Day Master (日主) is the Heavenly Stem of your Day Pillar and represents you. There are ten: Yang and Yin Wood (甲/乙), Fire (丙/丁), Earth (戊/己), Metal (庚/辛) and Water (壬/癸). Every other element in your chart is interpreted through its relationship to your Day Master.

What are the Ten Gods in BaZi?

The Ten Gods (十神) describe how each stem in your chart relates to your Day Master: 比肩 and 劫财 (peers and competition), 食神 and 伤官 (output and expression), 偏财 and 正财 (wealth), 七杀 and 正官 (pressure and authority), 偏印 and 正印 (support and learning). They map life domains — career, money, relationships, creativity — onto your chart.

What are Luck Pillars and when do mine change?

Luck Pillars (大运) are ten-year cycles that begin at a starting age calculated from your birth — the distance in days to the nearest solar term, converted at three days per year. Each pillar introduces a new stem and branch that interact with your birth chart, which is why the same person experiences different decades so differently. The calculator shows your starting age and the exact year each pillar begins.

What does my season of birth mean?

The month you were born sets the season (月令), and the season decides which element is strongest in your chart. Spring strengthens Wood, summer Fire, autumn Metal, winter Water, with Earth peaking in the transition months (辰未戌丑). Your Day Master's strength against the season — 旺相休囚死 — is the foundation of reading a chart.

What if I don't know my birth time?

Tick "I don't know my birth time." Your year, month and day pillars — including your Day Master and Luck Pillars — remain accurate; only the hour pillar is omitted. A practitioner can sometimes rectify an unknown birth time from major life events.

How is Bazi different from my Chinese zodiac animal?

Your zodiac animal is just the Earthly Branch of your year pillar — one-eighth of your chart. BaZi reads all eight characters and their interactions, which is why two people born in the same year can have completely different charts and lives.

Can Bazi predict the future?

Bazi maps tendencies and timing, not fixed fate. It shows the elemental weather of your decades — when conditions favour career pushes, caution, study or consolidation. What you do inside that weather remains your decision. As practitioners say: 命 is the hand you were dealt; 运 is how the game unfolds; strategy is still yours.
